Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) Care and Treatment in DFW

What is POTS?

Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome or POTS is a chronic condition defined as an increase in heart rate of 30 beats per minute or more within 10 minutes of standing. It may have various symptoms that can limit people’s daily activities. It is a form of dysautonomia, which refers to disorders of the autonomic nervous system that controls vital body functions. POTS can be attributed to different conditions, such as peripheral neuropathy, increased sympathetic tone, and hypovolemia. It is most often diagnosed in young women, but persons of any age can develop it.

Causes of POTS

The exact cause of POTS is not fully understood, but several factors may contribute to its development:

  1. Neuropathic POTS:  This form involves damage to the small nerve fibers that control blood vessel constriction, leading to poor blood flow regulation.
  2. Hyperadrenergic: Generally associated with a high concentration of norepinephrine that leads to high heart rate and raised blood pressure.
  3. Hypovolemic: A decrease in the volume of circulating blood that impacts blood pressure and circulation within the general body.
  4. Autoimmune Disorders: Some people with POTS also have autoimmune disorders, indicating that the immune system might be the underlying cause.

Symptoms of POTS

POTS is associated with a diverse array of symptoms, which can vary in severity and frequency:
